Cordele is a small city along Interstate 75 in southern Georgia. It is 140 miles south of Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, and 100 miles north of the State of Florida border. Cordele was founded in the late 1800s by J. E. D. Shipp. The city was able to flourish due to its location at the junction of the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery Railroad and the Georgia Southern and Florida Railroad. Cordele is named in honor of Cordelia Hawkins, the daughter of the president of the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery Railroad. On January 1, 1888, Cordele became an incorporated municipality.
